More... (29 Jul)
On July 25 and 26, Mike McEvoy, sailing with Duncan Schaeffer of Ohio, won the Fireball fleet at the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association Race Week, hosted by the Sayville Yacht Club on the south shore of Long Island.
In some very challenging conditions, Mike was able to beat a fleet of Fireballs which had gathered from three states and Ontario.
Elizabeth Wylie and Jeremy Kennedy, also from NSC, participated too, finishing fourth.
Due to the large amount of precipitation in the last week, Chats Falls is

NSC's Aaron Wong-Sing, Christine Lavallée, Marg Hurley and Peter Wood
sailed the 2.4mR Canadian Championships last weekend at National Yacht Club.

(23 Jul)
The fleet size was 16 boats with six sailors with disabilities and 10 able bodied sailors. A truly integrated fleet. Five races were held on Saturday in a south westerly breeze which died by mid afternoon. Sunday started in a moderate westerly that died by early afternoon allowing us time to pack up our boats and get on the road at a reasonable time. We also got Aaron scrubbed and off to his cousin’s wedding for 4:00pm.
When the results got posted Paul Tingley of Halifax Nova Scotia, Gold medalist in the 2.4mR class at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics was first, Allan Leibel of Toronto a two time Olympian (1972 & 1976) was second and Gerry Wendt an Etchells and 2.4mR sailor from Toronto was third. Of our NSC team Peter Wood was 8th, Christine Lavallee was 13th, Marg Hurley was 14th and Aaron Wong-Sing was 16th. We still have lots of learning.
The next major 2.4mR regatta will be the North American Championships at Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club in early September.
The next Martin 16 regatta will be the Coupe de Quebec at Pointe Claire July 25 & 26.
NSC Ryan Mott and Ryan O'Donnell won 1st place at the Sterers Regatta in the
Laser II class last week at Port Credit YC.

The Sunday, 28 June Pinhey's Point Race is the 1st of the 2009 NSC / BYC Interclub Long Distance Races.
(25 Jun)
The race will be hosted by BYC and the plan is for an 1100 hr warning gun at the "S" mark.
This is a race for Dinghies, PHRF, JAM & C&C 27 O-D, with the JAM Fleet and C&C27s finishing at Pinhey's Point and PHRF boats finishing at the "S" mark. Appendix A of the Sailing Instructions should be consulted for official instructions, including the course description.
This relatively short distance makes it an ideal event for families and newcomers to long distance racing who are interested in trying out something new on a summer weekend. The home stretch sprint for the JAM Fleet and C&C27s is one of the more exciting of the Interclub Long Distance Series races as dozens of spectator boats anchor in Pinhey's Point Bay and racers are loudly cheered as they cross the finish line. With all those cameras present, you might even be able to find an award-winning photo of your boat dashing across the finish line. All are encouraged to participate or spectate.
The Bifurcation Mark Light has been remove for replacement.
It should be replaced early next week.

Do you have a tender in the yard? And do you care whether it is laying around
getting knocked around on the gravel? If you do, then come out next Saturday morning at 8 am for
3 or 4 hours and help build the rack. If you don't, then no one else will.
(reposted - 23 Jun)
Those of you who have tenders in the yard will want to prevent them from being damaged by frequent relocation.
For this reason we decided a couple of years ago to build tender racks for safe and tidy storage; leave the tender in the yard and only launch it for the trip up-river. We use the mast racks as the basis and assemble horizontal lumber beams to support your tenders.
I asked for volunteers twice before and got a poor response - maybe there was too much else going on. So lets have another attempt to get a bunch of tender owners together:
When - Saturday June 27 at 8 amSupervision - Bruce MacDonald
Tools - bring hammer and battery drill with #2 Robertson bit if you have one
Clothing - work gloves.

Harbour Master may tow boats from Service Docks.
(28 May)
Use of Service and Fuel Docks
Some members are selfishly ignoring the rules regarding use of the service and fuel dock areas. These rules are spelt out in the Harbour Policy clause 10.1.
You are not to moor at the fuelling dock except to refuel. This week I had occasion to make a member move his boat from the fuelling dock; he was there only because all the other Service Docks were full. Especially during fitting out time, do not leave your boat at a service dock unnecessarily. If you MUST leave it there for more than 2 hours (ie. battery charging) it MUST be registered with Gene or Jay. And the maximum time in any case is 24 hours. On the weekends and statutory holidays 2 hours is the absolute maximum.
I will not hesitate to tow boats which ignore these rules and make it difficult for everyone else.

For members with boats not launched but sitting in storage areas:
To help with the ongoing management of the available space in the Yard, NSC is rearranging the locations for Summer-Stored boats (which includes boats that are For Sale) and specific areas have been designated in the Yard for this purpose.
As you know, the Club's objective was to have all boats launched by May 23. As of May 26 there are over 100 boats whose owners have paid for moorings and whose boats are still in the yard. If you have been unable to launch your boat by this date for medical or overseas assignment reasons and have not already informed me, please let me know as soon as possible. Also if you have changed your plans and now plan to keep your boat in the Yard for the summer, let me know.
If your boat is not launched, and if I have not heard from you by May 31 YOUR MOORING MAY BE REASSIGNED TO A MEMBER ON THE WAIT LIST !

30 April Toonies Talk: The Racing Rules of Sailing 2009-2012.
(28 Apr)
The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) are the rules that govern the conduct of the sport of sailboat racing and include the so-called "right of way" rules for boats that are racing. The rules are written by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and are published every four years in the year following the Olympic Games. The current version of the RRS – 'The Racing Rules of Sailing 2009-2012', came into effect on 1 January 2009 and can be found online at:
www.sailing.org/tools/counter.php?id=536.
We are fortunate to have David Searle to speak to us about what rules have changed, what these changes are and how these rule changes will affect us as we go into the 2009 sailboat racing season.
David will be able to speak about recent interpretations that he has seen used during his Race Committee experience in Key West and Charleston Race Weeks.

Coming Soon to NSC - Custom Team Shirts!
(13 Feb)
Here's a chance to make your crew look really smart.
NSC custom team shirts and high performance team shirts are now part of Regalia. Check out the samples in the NSC display cabinet.
Performance shirts are high-tech wikie fiber designed for competition. They are custom with your boat name, with a fancy NSC racing logo and potential corporate sponsor logo ad-ons.
Performance long sleeve shirts come in black or red, while the short sleeve shirts come in white, black, navy, maroon and light blue all with the light grey shoulders and side panels.
These shirts start at $50.
Our "Value" team shirts are familiar Regalia offerings with your boat name embroidered on the front for $5 and/or your boat's name screened on the back for $10-$15 plus tax. You choose. Team shirts make a great value with NSC's existing collarless cotton $10 short sleeve.
All custom team shirts are available for ordering on the Regalia website. No profits here,
and any bulk savings are passed on to you. For more information contact nsc-publicrelations @nsc.ca
or check out The regalia page.

All ladders left in the yard must be securely chained and padlocked
(as per Harbour Policy 5.3.4).
(10 Nov)
When our boats are in winter storage in the yard they become a target for break-ins; not necessarily just to steal items, but also for vandalism.
In order to reduce the opportunity for this to occur, we require that all ladders left in the yard are securely chained and padlocked (see Harbour Policy 5.3.4).
There will be a "blitz" to check for unsecured ladders next weekend November 15/16. Any ladders not found to be firmly secured and locked will be removed. Unsafe ladders will be destroyed and put in the garbage. Sound ladders will be locked up securely until owners claim them in the spring.

The owners of masts in the mast rack area without identification labels must contact the Harbour Master.
(2 Nov)
In spite of several requests there are still about 20 masts in the mast rack area (includes those on horses) without identification labels. These are marked with yellow caution tape "flags". Most are obviously very large and should be in the mast rack area. If you have applied for an identification label, pick up your label from Julie and attach to the mast. If you have not applied for a label, send a note to the Harbour Master nsc-rearcommodore at nsc.ca stating why you cannot store your mast on the boat and a label will be available from Julie. We need to know how many genuinely need winter mast storage so that we can plan for the best use of the mast racks.
There are two masts there which a) are a maximum of 30 ft long and obviously from smaller boats and b) still have the spreaders assembled. The owners of these masts have until next weekend November 9 to remove these masts or they will be removed to an indeterminate area of the yard.
A reminder to the members that the Membership renewal payment is due
on November 01. Late fees apply starting Monday Nov 03.

Members: no mast to be stored on racks without Harbour Master's approval.
Authorization label required on mast or mast will be removed.

(14 Oct)
Fix authorisation label securely to foot of mast. Masts stored without an authorisation label will be removed.
Please store your mast on your boat unless It is
- exceedingly long overhang in relation to the boat,
- You have a winter cover that does not accomodate the Mast on the Boat.
The Number of masts on saw horses covering much needed winter storage, and Spring Staging, and summer use area has gotten way out of hand in the last few years. The mast racks were built to accomodate those masts that "have" to be stored off the boat for one of the above reasons.
