NSC Marine Emergency Procedures

In all situations take no chances and stay safe – print out this information and keep it handy.

LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCY

• Call *16 on Cell-phone or 911 on land-line to report emergency.
• Stay in contact with boat in trouble if you can.
• If nearby and already on the water, you must respond if you can do so safely, without risking equipment, yourself, or other personnel .

BOAT FIRE or DOCK FIRE

• Call Ottawa Fire Service at 613-232-1551.
• Clear area of all spectators and keep access clear for Fire Dept.
• If you are SURE THERE IS NO DANGER OF EXPLOSION use fire extinguishers.  i.e. An external fire not near a fuel source, fuel tankage, or propane containers.
• Take no chances, stay safe.

NON-LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCY

• Aground on rocks, no propulsion/anchor dragging, any medical emergency.
• Call Ottawa Fire Service at 613-232-1551.
• If nearby and already on the water, you must respond if you can do so safely, without risking equipment yourself or other personnel.

MINOR EMERGENCY

• No fuel, aground on soft bottom.
• Suggest boater try kedging if aground, or hailing other nearby watercraft for assistance.
• Ask for Club Volunteer if out of fuel; qualified volunteers are permitted to use club boat for fuel delivery.
• Suggest boater try sailing to emergency dock located at north end of W-dock.  Club boat can tow to service dock or assigned slip eventually.

As a last resort call CCG or OFS for assistance coordination

Staff do not perform towing services outside of harbour.

Members may use club boats to respond if qualified.
