The Nepean Sailing Club (NSC) is located at Dick Bell Park on Lac Deschênes a
widening of the Ottawa River in Ottawa (Nepean), Ontario. The club was founded in
1979 under the auspices of the The City of Nepean, Parks and Recreation Department.
With the amalgamation of various cities in the region, it was integrated into the
City of Ottawa recreation network in 2001. Further history of the Club can be found
by clicking here.
The NSC is a family-oriented, volunteer based organization dedicated to promoting and encouraging active participation by members and the general public in the sport of sailing and recreational boating. A great deal of what has been developed to date is due to volunteerism and a love of boating at a reasonable cost.
The NSC is a very active racing and cruising club with over 1200 members through approximately 575 memberships. Our harbour holds approximately 450 keel-boats and there are over 100 dinghies and cats in our dry sail area. We are an active racing club with short course racing 4 evenings a week, long course events on weekends, and several regattas throughout the season.
The NSC is also proud to provide support and sailing facilities for persons with a disability in the National Capital Region. In conjunction with the National Capital Adaptive Sail Association, NSC operates a very active Adaptive Sail program. The Club operates a fleet of Martin 16s for this program with locally developed technology. Volunteer Sailing Companions are also available to introduce new participants to the joy and freedom of sailing.
The NSC is a non-smoking building with bright, airy and spacious rooms with high natural wood beams and ceilings. The Clubhouse also features a licensed lounge and deck overlooking the harbour, with an unobstructed view of the Ottawa River and the Gatineau Hills. Washrooms and showers are accessible from the docks and dry sail area. Ice and soft drink machines are also located on the ground level. Facilities are fully accessible and there is ample free parking.

We look forward to welcoming all NCCup 2010 sailors, their family and friends to the NSC!
The National Capital Adaptive Sail Association (NCASA) is a non profit self help association whose members are sailors with disabilities and others who are interested in promoting independent sailing for people with disabilities in the Ottawa area.
The mandate of NCASA is to promote these sailing opportunities in a welcoming environment where participants will experience camaraderie and friendship of the sailing community while developing their sailing skills. Sailing provides an exciting opportunity for even those with severe disabilities to reach more independence. The feeling of freedom, movement, control and independence is critical in helping the person with a disability along the path to community reintegration, acceptance and participation.
Our sailing activities take place on Lac Deschênes through the facilities provided by the Nepean Sailing Club (NSC). While our program participants are primarily people with disabilities, the program also relies on instructors and volunteers drawn mainly from the Nepean Sailing Club plus health care workers from the Rehabilitation Centre of the Ottawa Hospital on Smyth Road, Ottawa and the general population.
The National Capital Adaptive Sail Association:
- works co-operatively with the Directors of the Nepean Sailing Club to ensure suitable space for boat storage, docking and launching, to obtain qualified instructors and to ensure that safety boats are at hand when NCASA members are sailing on Lac Deschênes. Administrative staff of the NSC make booking arrangements and handle billing and collection of sailing fees.
- co-operates with the Rehabilitation Centre to provide sailing recreation for their inpatients. This activity is scheduled weekly throughout the summer months.
Our interests in sailing include participation in racing and competition training opportunities, involvement in, and arranging for local events, training volunteer personnel and preparation of our interested sailors for the Ottawa's Annual Championship - NCCup 2010.
NCASA in delighted to be a Partner with the NSC
as hosts for
NCCup 2010
We welcome both the sailors with disabilities who will come to the event
and the people of Ottawa to come out and be part of the fun.
We hope all our guests will enjoy an unforgettable experience!
The
Nepean Sailing Club is located on one of Canada's major rivers, the Ottawa
River (en français - Rivière des Outaouais) It flows for
approximately 1,120 km (696 mi), rising in the Canadian Shield and eventually
flowing into the St. Lawrence River near Montréal. For most of its length it
forms the boundary between the provinces of Québec and Ontario.
The river has a very rich history. The first European to visit the river was probably the French explorer Étienne Brûlé, in 1610. It was an important early transportation route into the western interior, and was controlled by the Algonquin tribe. It became the primary route for the fur trade until the early 19th century, when the Rideau Canal, linking the Ottawa River and Lake Ontario, was built. Lumbering then became the river valley's chief industry for the next hundred years. The river is also notable for its extensive hydroelectric development.
Lac Deschênes is a widening of the Ottawa River, caused by a constriction of the flow of the river through the Deschênes Rapids. The lake stretches about 5 km from the rapids to Aylmer Island at which point the river begins to narrow down again. At its widest point, the lake is approximately 1 km wide.
The lake is a popular sailing area with over 1000 boats located in 5 sailing clubs around the shoreline of the lake. The prevailing winds are usually from the northwest and in the high ranges can cause a fair wave action down the river since it is oriented northwest - southeast at this point.

Ottawa,
Canada's Capital, sits on the border of the province of Ontario in central Canada.
It was made capital of the British colonial Province of Canada in 1857. In the 20th
century, a much larger Capital Region was created to serve as a frame for Canada's
Capital. Since 1969, Ottawa and Gatineau (two cities that face each other across
the broad Ottawa River) and the surrounding urban and rural communities have been
formally recognized as Canada's "capital area."
As Canada’s Capital, Ottawa has many attractions of interest to the visitor. In addition to competing in NCCup 2004, sailors, family and friends will find spending an extra few days a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
