Mohr Island Race
The traditional NSC Mohr Island Race is an up-down, one day race. Mohr Island is almost 20 Nm up-river from NSC, past Constance and Buckham's Bays, and just before MacLarens Landing on the Ontario shore; the town of Quyon is a few miles further, on the Quebec side.
Forty plus miles of sailing on the Ottawa River makes for a long day. But in recent years, NSC's race has been partly combined with BYC's Margarita Weekend Race. The BYC racing involves a one-way race to Mohr Island on Saturday, a very social raft-up on Saturday evening, and another race home on Sunday afternoon. As with all Interclub long distance events, NSC and BYC boats are welcome to partake in each others' races, and as its name suggests, BYC's Margarita Weekend has a reputation for being a great party!
When we say "partly combined", it's because this weekend actually combines 3 events: NSC's up-down one-day race, BYC's Margarita Weekend Race, and one of the Interclub Long Distance (ILD) races. All boats start together, and the first leg of the race to Mohr Island counts for everyone as part of the ILD series. Those wishing to continue racing return down-river to finish in front of NSC. Up for grabs is the Scotts Restaurants trophy for the first PHRF boat, as well as the Lone Ranger Cup, for the first JAM boat. Those wishing to remain overnight at Mohr Island, can join the BYC race home on Sunday.
