The Nepean Sailing Club has adapted programs and accessible sailboats for Persons with Special Needs.

Based on your needs, various program choices are available throughout the week, with daytime and evening options.

You can progress from a demonstration session to on-water training, later trying recreational sailing and even racing.

Adaptive Sail - Daytime

Description: The Learn to Sail-Daytime is a program aimed at introducing basic sailing concepts to participants through activities on and off the water. The curriculum includes water safety, knots, sail trim (points of sail) and boat handling. The course objective is for participants to be able to comfortably sail around a course with their companions. Participants may also achieve the CYA CANSail 1 or 2 standard. All registrants receive a current year NSC Crewing Membership at no charge.

Length: 5 weeks, Sundays and Mondays, 1-4pm.

Adaptive Sail - Evening

Description: The Learn to Sail-Evening is a program aimed at introducing basic sailing concepts to participants through activities on and off the water. Flex Sail Blocks

Recommended Age: 13+

Prerequisites: none

Description: New this year! For participants who would like to take Learn to Sail lessons but have schedule conflicts with the group lessons. Participants may purchase a “block” of 10 hours of instructional time that they may use in 2-hour increments at times they arrange with the sailing instructor.

Special conditions for the Flex-Lesson Block

  • Blocks must be purchased by July 31, 2012 to allow adequate time to use the hours.
  • Blocks must be used in 2-hour increments.
  • Unused hours may not be refunded, or carried into the following season
  • Individual instruction is not guaranteed – if another participant(s) has a compatible schedule, you may be a part of a group lesson. Lessons will still be tailored to your sailing level.

  • Thursdays 12:00-4:00,
  • Fridays 12:00-4:00,
  • Some weekday evenings or weekend mornings/afternoons may be available.

Recreational Sails

Prerequisites: WS I

Description: Adaptive sailors can enjoy the water at NSC by booking an available boat and making arrangements with an instructor or volunteer. Simply email the NSC Able Sail program at nsc-ablesail@nsc.ca to reserve your boat and to confirm your companion arrangements. Available Time Slots: Wednesday 5:00-9:00, Thursdays 12:00-4:00, Fridays 12:00-4:00 Time slots are subject to change throughout the season. Some other slots may be available depending on boat and companion availability, please email to inquire.

Demo/Group Sail

Prerequisites: None

Description: Demo/group sails offer individuals or groups with physical or developmental disabilities (including the visually and hearing impaired) the opportunity to sail in specially designed sailboats. Individuals are paired up with able bodied companions and taken on a 20 minute cruise of Lac Deschene. The Nepean Sailing clubhouse and site is fully accessible. Please arrange to be at the dock at least 15 minutes before your scheduled sailing time to allow adequate time for preparation.
