About

Easter Seals: Working Hard For Tomorrow

Easter Seals Ontario was founded in 1922 with a vision to create a better life for children and youth with physical disabilities. Since then, Easter Seals has been providing financial assistance to families of kids with physical disabilities for costly equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, braces and communication devices. Many of these necessities need to be changed as the child grows and can cost a Family between $10,000 and $40,000 a year.

Easter Seals Ontario also runs two fully accessible residential camps providing specialized programs for Easter Seals kids. As a result of your support 64 kids from this community to Camp Merrywood, our specially designed camping facility in Perth. For most of our kids, this is what they look forward to all year!

The Ottawa Easter Seals Regatta: 16 years and going strong!

The Easter Seals Regatta in Ottawa began in 1996, hosted by the Britannia Yacht Club. In 2003 Nepean Sailing Club also took part. This year marks the fifth time where both clubs are working together to host an expanded program of activities for the benefit of the Easter Seals Society. Over the past 15 years, theĀ  clubs have raised over $700,000 for Easter Seals Kids and families in the National Capital Region.

With your support, and the support of countless volunteers from the sailing community, we raised over $56,000 in 2010. The amount raised from this single event represents 1/4 of the funding Easter Seals provided to over 400 Easter Seals Families in the National Capital Region.

The Clubs

Two of the largest sailing clubs on the Ottawa River will participate in the Ottawa Easter Seals Regatta and Bring on the Bay Swim events.

The Nepean Sailing Club was founded in 1979 under the auspices of the then City of Nepean and is located on the south side of Lac Deschenes beside Andrew Hayden Park. Over the years the club has grown from a trailer-based operation to a large club having two sailing pavilions. The main clubhouse overlooks a man-made harbour sheltering approximately 500 boats and is home to the Adaptive Sail Program, designed for independent sailing by persons with any disability.

The Britannia Yacht Club is the oldest sailing club on the Ottawa River, with its predecessor club having been incorporated in 1887. Its well-situated location at the end of Lac Deschenes adjacent to the Deschenes Rapids provides a wonderful view of sunsets over the lake from its historic clubhouse.
