ABLE Sailors may choose to sail recreationally with NSC volunteer companion sailors or join our Martin 16 Race team! Competing in regattas builds confidence, camaraderie and is a true test of sailing skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 24px;font-weight: normal\"><strong>NSC is a designated Provincial Paralympic Training Centre<\/strong> under the leadership of Peter Wood and is home to our athletes, Christine Laval\u00e9e\u00a0and Arron Wong Sing. Both are well known on the 2.4 R Metre Race Circuit. At the 2013 Canada Summer Games,\u00a0Christine sailing for Quebec, won the gold medal in the 2.4 mR class. Aaron Wong-Sing, sailing\u00a0for Ontario, won bronze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Nepean Sailing Club facilities and site are fully accessible.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\"><strong>The History of ABLE Sailing in Canada<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 24px;font-weight: normal\">The first &#8220;adapted&#8221; sailboat was introduced to Canada\u00a0at Expo 86 in Vancouver, when the United Kingdom&#8217;s Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher donated a 15-foot\u00a0<em>Sunbird<\/em> to Rick Hansen, Canada&#8217;s &#8220;Man in Motion&#8221;. He in turn asked Sam Sullivan, a quadraplegic from Vancouver, to develop a sailing program for those with mobility impairments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 24px;font-weight: normal\">Since that time a number of disabled sailing associations have been formed across Canada, and the\u00a0<em>Sunbird<\/em> has gradually been replaced by the Canadian-made\u00a0<a title=\"Learn to Sail\" href=\"http:\/\/nsc.ca\/web2\/ablesail\/learn-to-sail\/\">Martin 16<\/a>. In 1995, NSC&#8217;s ABLE Sail Program was introduced to the area!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\"><strong>Objectives<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 14px;font-weight: normal\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 24px\">NSC aims to enable individuals with disabilities to discover sailing.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 24px;font-weight: normal\">We offer the opportunity, staff and equipment for those with mobility impairments to learn how to sail independently.\u00a0Our Martin 16 sailboats, are specially designed for adaptive sailing.\u00a0We strive to remove any obstacles that an Able sailor might face in learning to sail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 14px;font-weight: normal\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;line-height: 25px\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 24px;font-weight: normal\">Our\u00a0goal is to\u00a0give Able sailors the chance to gain confidence in their own abilities and make them independent sailors.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 24px;font-weight: normal\">We strongly believe that sailing can have a positive effect on a person&#8217;s social and personal life, and that it gives the sailor freedom and independence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\"><strong>How?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 24px;font-weight: normal\">NSC&#8217;s five\u00a0Martin 16 sail boats can be adapted to make sailing accessible to the disabled. \u00a0These keel boats\u00a0are <span class=\"Apple-style-span\">16 feet in length and\u00a0<\/span>have a 350 lb keel under them ensuring the boat never tips over into the water. Martin 16s\u00a0are very safe and never sink, even if the entire boat is filled with water! Our volunteer team helps to transfer sailors to their boat with an electric lift if required and companion sailors accompany able sailors on the \u00a0water.\u00a0NSC&#8217;s\u00a0qualified,<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">\u00a0friendly instructors \u00a0will ensure a comfortable, safe and<i><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/i>enjoyable sailing\u00a0experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The program is offered to anyone willing to get a little wet and is offered at a reasonable price!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Learn to SailBeginner &amp; Intermediate Recreation Sailing Racing Nepean Sailing Club\u00a0offers an adaptive sailing program for all types of abilities.
