Midnight Madness, Safety Considerations

The following safety considerations will be discussed by the Fleet Captain or the Midnight Madness Coordinator at the Skippers Meeting:

  • All boats should monitor VHF Channel 72, and in the event of an emergency, they should immediately request help.
  • PFDs should be worn by all crew.
  • Use of emergency lights and whistles is strongly encouraged by all crew members who are out of the cockpit.
  • Racing will be abandoned if there are any thunderstorms expected to hit the racing area.
  • If average winds are greater than 15 knots, or gusts are regularly above 22 knots, then racing will be white-sail only (aka JAM only). This will be announced by the RC on VHF prior to the Preparatory Signal.
  • If gusts are regularly above 25 knots, then racing will be abandoned.
  • For 2025, if a race is not completed, it will be re-scheduled for August 22, and the PPSTT will be pushed to August 29.
  • Skippers should be aware that depth perception and the ability to judge distance at night is severely diminished; skippers should act accordingly when maneuvering in the vicinity of other boats.
