Purple Martins returned to the NSC colony on their usual schedule, April 17, 2025. This season we recorded only 15 nesting pairs, producing 61 nestlings, all of which were banded. Unfortunately, this marks the lowest number on record for our site.

- Best year: 2009, with 386 chicks banded
- Last year: 2024, with 103 nestlings banded
- This year: 2025, 61 nestlings banded

One unusual highlight was the discovery of a leucistic Purple Martin nestling, a rare condition that alters feather pigmentation (see photo at right).
Despite the low numbers, our annual banding sessions once again drew strong interest from birders, photographers, and families. These events continue to highlight the importance of monitoring and maintaining the colony.
I wish to thank all participants and extend special appreciation for your donations. These funds help support the upkeep of the site and ensure we remain prepared for the return of the martins in April 2026.
Regards,
Peter Huszcz
