A Well-Rounded Program
Sailors come from all walks of life and at Nepean, we are fortunate to host a program directed at sailors with disabilities. The ABLE SAIL Program has evolved into a sophisticated, well-rounded program delivered to sailors from beginners to racers. The hardware for the program has evolved over the years: to a full fleet of Martin 16’s, equipped with autohelm (right and left-handed). There are also storage lockers and lifts. All these items make it possible for the sailors to get into a well-maintained boat four nights a week.
Companion Sailors
But one more thing is needed – companion sailors. These volunteers have the privilege of rigging the boats and assisting the sailors with transitions. And most importantly, sharing the sailing experience on the water with them.
This year was an exceptional year for ABLE SAIL. We arranged several outreach opportunities with a variety of community-based organizations, including rehabilitation centers. Each sailor has a story about how they came to be part of the program, from being invited to a day sail to being a part of it for many years. And each sailor has a personal story connected to their disability that presently limits them, but in no way defines them.
An Outstanding Experience
As a Companion Sailor, it’s an outstanding experience to watch the sailors feel awe and participation on the water. Respectful relationships are pervasive; the feeling of community is strong. Both are true whether out on the water learning to tack or participating in the National Capital Cup.
The ABLE SAIL program is a testament to the importance of inclusion. It offers its sailors the freedom to explore, the opportunity to connect, and the chance to discover their full potential.
New volunteers are always welcome to join this unique community next year, to spend some time with these remarkable individuals.
