Fleet Open House

The inaugural Fleet Open House at Nepean Sailing Club, held on Sunday, June 7, was a great success, bringing together current members, prospective sailors, and sailing enthusiasts for an afternoon of learning, networking, and community building.

A Boat Show on F-dock

The event began on F-Dock, where a collection of boats from across the club’s fleets was on display, ranging from Tanzer-22 to C&C-27. Visitors had the opportunity to tour the boats, meet owners and fleet representatives, and learn firsthand about the variety of sailing opportunities available at NSC. The dockside experience provided an engaging introduction to the club and highlighted the depth and diversity of its sailing community.

Fostering Introductions and Conversations

Following the dockside component, attendees gathered in Harbourview Hall for a trade-show style event featuring information stations from many of the club’s fleets and programs. Particpating groups under the Fleet umbrella included Social Day Cruising, Dinghy Skills Programs, the about-to-launch Dinghy Co-op and Women in Wind. Several racing fleets took part, including impressive displays from the J/24, J/22 and J/80 fleet and a highly engaging booth hosted by the Tanzer 22 fleet. Together, these exhibits provided both current and prospective members with valuable insight into the many ways to get on the water at NSC, from competitive racing and recreational cruising to skills development and community-based sailing programs. The strong fleet participation showcased the vibrancy of the club while helping to demystify the pathways available to sailors of all experience levels.

Opportunities for Skippers

The Open House also demonstrated its value for current members, particularly skippers looking to connect with prospective crew. The event attracted a number of current and former sailors eager to return to the water, creating an opportunity to meet potential crew members face-to-face and establish new sailing connections, whether through Social Day Sailing, which is always keen to attract new skippers, or directly through the updated Crew Bank on the NSC web-site. Whether looking to build a racing crew or simply find additional hands for a casual sail on a beautiful summer evening, attendees were able to make contacts and explore opportunities across multiple fleets.

Thank-You’s!

A very special thank you Renee Young, who came up with the Open House concept, and the many other volunteers who helped Renee bring it to fruition. Thanks also to Doris, Ron, and the Advantage Boating team for joining us; they were busy throughout the event answering questions from prospective sailors, and helping attendees explore training, chartering, and sailing opportunities both locally and abroad.

The Fleet Committee would also like to recognize the outstanding support provided by the Bar and Galley staff, whose efforts contributed significantly to the welcoming atmosphere and overall success of the event. Based on the positive feedback received from attendees and exhibitors alike, the Fleet Committee looks forward to building on the success of this inaugural event and establishing the Fleet Open House as an annual tradition at Nepean Sailing Club.
