2025 Fleet Awards – Recap

This year’s Awards Night rolled out a new format: long tables, family-style dishes, and a relaxed dining setup that encouraged people to circulate, chat, and reconnect after a full season on the water. As guests enjoyed a variety of food, Fleet Captain Mike Roper took to the podium, joined by EmCees Matt Davidge and Leo Evans, to guide us through a streamlined and refreshed awards program. The focus stayed on the fleets as we celebrated a season filled with racing, camaraderie, unpredictable weather, and more than a few memorable moments. Alongside the racing results, three special awards took centre stage.

The Boole Trophy, awarded for outstanding sportsmanship and tenacity, went to Stephen Kidd, skipper of Tropical Quest. Despite sailing a boat not exactly built with racing in mind, Stephen committed to learning, improving, and steadily climbing the competitive ladder. Just as notable is his reputation for welcoming new sailors aboard Tropical Quest, giving many their very first racing experience and treating them with patience and respect. His steady presence, positive spirit, and commitment to community made him a well-deserving recipient.

Next up was The Dumper of the Year, always a crowd favourite. This year’s winner was Doug Corner, skipper of Aragorn, for a story that is already well on its way to becoming club legend. During a Tuesday night PHRF race, Doug unintentionally picked up the windward mark—and then the offset mark—and towed both around the course while the rest of the fleet attempted to round Aragorn instead. A unique tactical approach, to say the least, and one that generated plenty of laughter. As always, the award is given in good fun and serves as a reminder that even the best sailors occasionally find inventive new ways to complicate a racecourse.

Rounding out the special awards, The Commodore’s Cup was presented to Renée Young for her exceptional enthusiasm, leadership, and countless contributions to the racing community. Part morale officer, part unofficial ambassador, and an all-weather source of energy, Renée’s impact on participation and fleet culture was clear. The entire room rose in a standing ovation—unmistakable appreciation for everything she brings to NSC.

With the awards wrapped up, a musical duo took the stage and the evening shifted into easy conversation, dancing, and plenty of laughter. Despite the freezing rain outside, guests stayed—catching up, sharing stories, and enjoying the chance to unwind together. Awards Night 2025 celebrated results, of course, but more importantly it showcased the energy, camaraderie, and spirit that make NSC such a strong community. It was a night of warmth, connection, and just enough chaos to feel appropriately nautical.

Cheers to another year of great sailing, good friends, and excellent stories.
