Event Overview
On August 16, 2025, an enthusiastic group of sailors gathered on the NSC deck for an exhilarating day of racing in the inner harbour. The event brought together big personalities (people) and small boats (O’pen Bics) promising an unforgettable experience for all involved.

The Final Showdown
The last leg of the race featured a thrilling contest among John Rae, Kieran Whalen-Hughes, Luke Shepperd, and Zhanna Orazgalieva. The lead shifted five times between Zhanna, Luke, Kieran, and John, keeping everyone on edge as the outcome remained uncertain until the very end. The wind played a role (and the paddling).
Trophy Winner
John Rae claimed victory, his determination evident throughout the competition. The deck was alive with cheers as spectators encouraged every racer, adding to the lively atmosphere.

Gratitude and Support
This event was made possible thanks to the dedication of club members (volunteers), and a vibrant cheering section. Special thanks go to the race committee volunteers—Rick Nelson, Ann-Marie Sahagian, and Julie Cavanagh—who worked tirelessly under the summer sun. Their contributions to NSC events are deeply appreciated. You can catch these fine folks volunteering at the various regattas in Ottawa and at other locations in Eastern Ontario.
Support Team
The NSC bosuns—Luke Sheppard, Owen Turner, Trent Hesselink, Liam McCullough with club members – Renee Young, and Zhanna Orazgalieva—were instrumental in rigging the O’pen Bics. After the event, Renee, Zhanna, Jay Morden, Leo Evans, and Luke assisted in de-rigging the boats and securing all equipment. And we cannot forget the support from NSC and the sailing school. A special shout out to Luke for setting up the course. (He was not working as the head bosun but volunteering his time).
Thank You
A heartfelt thank you to all participants and everyone who contributed to making this day in the harbour both enjoyable and memorable. The Trophy was presented to John (unofficially) and will be presented officially at the NSC Awards Night on 15 November 2025.
