Please save the date: Saturday, June 10, 2017, from 2:00pm until about 7:00pm. What is Sailpast? Great question!
Like many things in sailing, the sail-past tradition has it’s roots in the Royal Navy. On special occasions, fleets would be reviewed by the Admiral while they “sailed past“.
Following this tradition, yacht clubs introduced “sailpast” as a special occasion when members would, literally, “sail past” the Commodore as a nod to the tradition of reviewing the fleet. For most Clubs, Sailpast has become the kickoff-event of the sailing season.
At NSC, Sailpast is an afternoon – a quick sail with a stop on water to salute the Commodore and then back to the harbour for “refreshments and socializing” (code for food and drinks). This year, the party starts when you land back at the dock with the NSC-version of a “floating tailgate party” (is that a “Transom Party”?).
Additionally, if you’ve been a member at NSC for “some-number-of-years-divisible-by-ten”, you’ll also be invited to receive a commemorative, customized, NSC burgee.
Should I attend?
Yes.
Sailpast at NSC is a chance to enjoy your Club and a reason to spend a little time boating with family and friends. This is a “members and their guests” event – the Club will be closed to the public and the Galley & Bar staff will be focused on helping us with the BBQ. Please come! Show-off your own boat, join a member on their boat, bring along some friends and family.
Tell me more…
More details will be coming quickly, keep an eye on your email inbox, nsc.ca and the Telltale. There won’t be tickets for the event, but we will pass the hat for donations. In the meantime:
- Save the date,
- Find some pals,
- Get some flags.
After a very unpredictable Spring, you’ve earned a boating celebration. Really looking forward to seeing you on the 10th.
