How To Use BOX (box.com)

Box.com

Box.com is the cloud-based storage solution adopted by NSC in 2012 for storing corporate documents, particularly non-HTML files referenced on NSC’s website. These documents are primarily PDFs but also include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, JPG, Sailwave, and other file types. All files in Box are organized within a directory structure, and as of 2022, NSC’s Box account contains over 7,000 files.

To upload files to NSC’s Box account, users must have their own Box account. This account can either be associated with a position (e.g., commodore, fleet) or be an individual’s personal account linked to their personal email address. Users are invited to collaborate on files or folders within Box, which grants them the same privileges to any subfolders within the shared directory.

Users can share links to files within Box, which can then be referenced in WordPress pages and posts. For example, on the Sailing Instructions page, a link is provided to the following document: PDF file on Box. Clicking this link will open the PDF file stored in Box. Alternatively, a link may open a file or folder directly in the Box viewer, though this is less commonly used on the website, and this practice is discouraged as some browsers like Safari do not allow direct opening from external sources. For example, this link opens the Sailing Instructions in the Box viewer, instead of opening them in Adobe. Note that this link does not have a .pdf extension.

Below are some helpful links for users and collaborators working with Box.com. Note that links not hosted on nsc.ca will open in a new tab.
